So, I am obviously a little obsessed with pageants at the moment! They seem to be the only thing that inspires me, oh well, I guess its not a bad thing.

Anyway, here is my first draft for the first round of MDE 2013 [link]

I tried really hard to get the composition right this time, so huge thanks to `Pyrochan-dolls for her awesome tutorial. Overall I'm pretty happy with her, but i think she needs something else, i just can't work out what!!! So please cc away.

Bases both by me unreleased

Well, I can definitely see your style showing through, and I like that. The eyebrows on the fullbody are still a little bushy compared to the portrait, though. I also think that the shading on her blouse seems very....flat? monotoned. Try putting in some shades more towards the blue side of the color wheel in the shadows. I'd also add a few strands of hair escaping in the front on the portrait, to match the back.

I love the teal! you work with teal colours so well really :)
Loving the hairstyle on the doll, however (and here comes my cc) the portrait looks kinda bald compared to the full doll.
Maybe with some loose strands of hair peeking out on the side

p.s loving that bag

I agree with Bree, the arms (the bottom half) are a tad too short on the full body. Try making them a couple of pixels longer (slightly shortening the sleeve may also help) I would define the shoulder on the portrait a bit more, right now it's too small. Here are some examples: [link] and [link] (the first two images show the shoulder area pretty well)

Also two more things. I like the colour combo but it's too toned down compared to other schemes I've seen around, try using Levels, Contrast or any of those tools to make colours pop. And the portrait seems to have big breasts, whereas the full body is pretty flat. You may need to rework the shading on her blouse.

The brows issue can be fixed by adding a bit of her skin colour (or another colour as make up) to the eye area on the full body. The portrait's face is actually better. But that may also have to do with the colours being a bit on the dark/desaturated side. I go through that with every doll, I know the feeling.

Thank you for your CC, seriously, I love it when you comment because it is so constructive and uber helpful! The shoulder refs were fantastic btw, I have only done some quick editing, but I think it already looks better. I think the boobs are a little better now too, again, very quickly done, but I'm pretty happy with them, I just get worried I'm gonna overdo it.

I have posted the edited version on the MDE background colour, as I think the colours look much better on there. I may up the vibrancy, but its not very me, for some reason I like things desaturated!

I'm glad you find it useful, I was worried I sounded to blunt. The arm still needs some work. I hope you don't mind but I did some redlines to show what I meant.

[link]

In order to fix the arm I traced over your doll. That's when I noticed something was off about her pose. The position of the arms and legs was bothering me, but the clothes hid the exact problem. A stick figure was enough to see what was wrong (to me at least)

Judging by her pose she looks as if she were walking and is about to move her right leg to the front. I may be making stuff up but that contradicts the twisting you've added to her shoulders. Her right arm has already moved to the front while her right leg is still halfway through. Even if she's just standing, that pose looks rather uncomfortable. If you make her face the screen, you can creat a similar effect by tilting her shoulders and hips. I'm not really sure that pose is comfortable, though. But it looks more balanced to me. Never miss an opportunity to show both feet, especially from two different angles, that's always a plus.

Once you have the pose, you can sketch the outfit and focus on designing and colouring without having to worry about the bothersome anatomy.

As for contrast, I understand, and it does look better on the pageant's background colour, but the green-turquoise you're using as a pop of colour could use some more saturation, that way when people browse through the many entries for round 1, yours will stand out much more. As you can see my command of Levels and Curves is nonexistent, but it shows you how it would look with a little bit of extra contrast. You could also use some of the pop colour on her boots (the sole or the heel) or tights (a pattern or something) or some silvery details on her boots (zip, studs, buckles, etc) so they don't look so dark. The main focus for this round is boots, isn't it?

I'm sorry for the double post, but I just noticed that link doesn't work. Here are the redlines: [link]

P.S. Next time I'll use Photobucket ¬¬

Blunt is good!!! I'm far to old to get offended by that sort of thing, I've been through school, uni and now worked being critiqued all the time, it's all about improvement, and having a fresh set of eyes!

You are an absolute legend! It was a bit difficult not just to use your stuff cause you are so uber talented, I was like, damn, thats better, now how do I do better than a quick sketch! Anyway, I took most of your well considered advice, and the next version is done, there will be more to do I'm sure, but I think sheis well on her way.

In all honestly, I am so grateful that you took the time to help me, I've been dolling on and off now for nearly 15 years, and I was feeling like, with the demise of the big old communities on the UG and WTM, the dolling world wasn't the same (not that its entirely a bad thing!) It is so wonderful when someone in front of a computer somewhere gives up their time to help another creative, for no reason than to share experience and knowledge. So yeah, umm THANK YOU!!!!

I should be thanking you. I had some free time from college and thought I would use it to doll something, but I seem to be having a severe art block and achieved nothing. Redlining MDE entries has been quite refreshing and it allowed me to keep drawing whithout having to come up with my own ideas. It is also an excuse to work with poses or concepts I'd never tried before. Your entry has been my favourite since I never go for stylisation, so I enjoyed playing with it. And sketching is so much fun.

I was worried about being too direct because I know that after dealing with bluntness in almost every aspect of life, something that's done as a hobby shouldn't be ruined by it. But as you say, it's all a collaboration among different people and that's what dolling is really about. I've been dolling for 7 years and I always wanted to do this, sharing and learning from other people.

Thank you so much for the compliments, I'm blushing and giggling like a school girl right now XD

The doll: I definitely see it as a sound entry. The original idea is still there and it only needed some tweaking to give it some flare. I still think it's a bit too dark with that colour scheme, but it may also be my monitor. Have you tried upping the saturation of her blouse? Just to give her outfit that pop of colour to go with the darker colours.

My biggest CC is that the eyebrows on the portrait aren't as bushy looking as the ones on the fullbody. Also, her wrist on the portrait could use a smudge more definition. It's there but a little hard to see. Her collarbone is so defined and then the wrist just...isn't xD My only other concern is that her arms might be too short? They don't look badly done, but her body is so long that her arms just feel short to me. But I suck at antomy, so get a second opinion on that. Overall, I love the outfit and the color the of the blouse. The scarf on the portrait's head is really different and I like it.

Good luck though!

Thank you so much for your CC, did you mean the arms on the portrait or the full body? Cause if its the portrait, those are my arms so my anatomy is a bit freaky!! I have a really long torso but short arms and legs XD Anyhoo, hopefully the wrist and eyebrows look better now!
